WOLFSGORGE - natural site in Tyrol
The Wolfsklamm in Karwendel impressed the nature lover with thundering waterfalls, emerald green pools and a pleasant rising spray. Torrential floods, the roar of the stream and Stans fluctuating bridges can be walked through the beautiful Tyrolean Gorge for an unforgettable experience. Exactly 324 steps, boardwalks and beaten rock galleries lead up to the monastery of St. George mountain pilgrimage. After the gorge the Wanderwg goes to St. George Berg. Here, one is already in the nature reserve Karwendel. Just before reaching the rock monastery, it still happens with the monumental "High Bridge", a particularly complex and well made bridge.
A great hike with history
Even before the more than 100 years, precisely 11th August 1901, was inaugurated in the Wolfsklamm Stans as "Pearl of the Tyrol country." Since then, hundreds of thousands of walkers have raised the way done through the gorge. Even older is the monastery: The monastery of St. George - St. Georgenberg - was a mountain hermitage, which was first mentioned in 950 for the first time in writing. St. George Berg, is the oldest place of pilgrimage throughout the Tyrol. The monastery still exists, it is a place of power and a center of calm. The church is always open and it will be celebrated regularly worship. The massive bridge has a great history: The stone arch of 1497 was once the oldest bridge in the Tyrol.
Hiking information and how to come to Wolfsklamm
The starting point is the heart of the village of Stans, easily accessible by car via the motorway exit Schwaz. In Stans at the church there is free parking. From there follow the signs for "Wolfsklamm". The walk from Stans to St. George mountain is about 1.5 hours. In the shade of ancient chestnut trees spoil the hosts of the pilgrimage mountain retreat St. George their guests with delicious, traditional dishes from the region. Back to the Cross as an alternative to, or the Way of the Cross of Maria Weng tax take and make it a nice round trip. The hike is also family-friendly. Older children will appreciate the "adventure" Wolfklamm. But please with care! Hiking in Karwendel mountains is very popular.
