Karwendel Holidays Alps

Here you find the Karwendel highlights for your excursion or holidays in the Alps. I live as a travel blogger in the Karwendel and pass my experiences on to you – without make-up. For me, the Karwendel is the paradise of the Alps. I am always amazed by the diversity of the clean lakes, the rustic alpine pastures and huts – and of course the imposing mountains with the craggy peaks made of bare rock. For years I have been experiencing the Karwendel Mountains in all seasons and yet I am always discovering something new. In the course of time I have also found great places to stop for refreshments, huts, inns and hotels to stay overnight. I share my best experiences with you on this website. Do you want to know which places are really beautiful and what you might also like? Then read this blog post. In this summary you can read how I got to the Karwendel, what drives me and how others report about me. At the end, I also answer the most frequently asked questions. You can also use an email or WhatsApp to remember the link to the page or recommend it to your friends – also via Facebook or Pinterest. So, now it goes into the brilliant nature of these breathtaking mountains.

The origin of the Isar in Scharnitz

These Holidays in the Alps start with a special nature experience in the Seefeld region. One of the well-known Bavarian rivers, the Isar, rises here in the middle of the Karwendel. I was at the source of the Isar and I can particularly recommend this natural gem to you. It goes for kilometers in a gentle incline through the Hinterautal until you reach the idyllic Isar springs. The best way to follow the wild Isar is by bike! It is an official and signposted route, the first stage of the famous Isar cycle path. Experience a relaxing day in the mountains! This natural wonder can even be explored on bikes with motivated children. You can also come by e-bike. So was my day at the source of the Isar:

Nature in the Leutasch

Just as beautiful, but with a different landscape, is the Leutasch valley. I can’t tell you all the great places at once, I’ve had so many brilliant experiences here. If you want to discover the best natural wonders of Leutasch, click on the link to Leutasch under these lines. To get started and get to know this beautiful corner of the Alps, I recommend an easy tour with a touring bike or e-bike through Leutasch. You will pass beautiful farms, follow the clean Leutascher Ache and at the end you can eat very good cakes, bacon from the farmers or great mountain cheese on the sun terrace of the Polis Hut. The Leutascher Ache is one of the most enchanting rivers in all of Tyrol. For overnight stays, I can recommend a hiking hotel in Leutasch that is also a certified organic hotel.

Old town Hall in Tirol

Hall in Tirol is a real insider tip. The place is like Mittenwald at the foot of the Karwendel. Hall in Tirol has the largest old town in Tirol – and is still relatively unknown. Another real insider tip that is worth exploring! I like the small town with its many towers and medieval streets. This is how I imagine a day of sightseeing: strolling, shopping, sitting in a cafe and broadening my mind. Be sure to visit the historic mint in the city and climb the high mint tower – from here you have the best view of the city. By the way, you will learn how the dollar was invented here in the mountains in Austria … And all around there is a lot of beautiful nature.

Sightseeing Innsbruck: The Top of Innsbruck on the Hafelekar

On the Hafelekar in the Karwendel – the Top of Innsbruck On the Hafelekar in the Karwendel The famous city of Innsbruck is right next to the old town of Hall in Tirol. Here I would advise you to go to the Top of Innsbruck. Thanks to the Nordkettenbahn, you can reach an altitude of over 2,256 meters without any effort. You are in the middle of the mountains without having to hike. The ideal destination for young and old! If your parents or grandparents love the mountains, it is the perfect goal for a daytrip. The summit cross of the famous Hafelekarspitze is very easy to reach on a walk. On the sun terrace of the Seegrube, mountaineers meet excursion guests who can enjoy the city’s highest strudel here. TIP: With my voucher code you pay less for your ticket. How to do it, I’ll tell you in this post about the Hafelekar – there is the Top of Innsbruck

Karwendel high-altitude hike on the Goetheweg

If you want to hike a little bit more, you can start from Hafelekar to the Goetheweg. It is one of the most popular high-altitude hikes in the entire Karwendel Mountains. Nowhere else can you take the train up that far and hike for hours with this great mountain panorama. Apparently Goethe already knew how beautiful it is up here! Take a look at it, fantastically beautiful: Goetheweg Innsbruck.

Hiking with the Rofan cable car

If you love scenic hikes, my next tip will also be interesting for you. You have the best view of the Achensee and the Karwendel from the Rofan. You can get up there very easily with the Rofan cable car. So you shorten your ascent and can hike up in the forest-free area. There are many great viewing peaks up here. You have a 360 degree view of the most famous peaks in the Alps. Find the right hike in this area – and visit the rustic huts with a view of the lake and Karwendel. I especially like the Erfurter Hütte, the Berggasthof Rofan and the Dalfazalm. With the Rofan cable car you can easily get up and enjoy it! A short hike up here leads to a special viewing platform on the Gschöllkopf.

Hiking with the Seefeld cable car

The Rosshütte mountain railway takes you up to the Karwendel at Seefeld. With the help of the cable car, you can easily hike to the Seefelder Spitze, where you can look to the left into the Karwendel Mountains and right to Seefeld and the Wetterstein Mountains with the famous Zugspitze. The circular hike to the Härmelekopf and then a Kaiserschmarrn on the Rosshütte is particularly beautiful. At least that’s how I did it. It is always a dream to stand up here in the middle of the pointed peaks. For all families: There is a large playground on the Rosshütte – with a mine, marble run and trampolines! Since summer 2021 you will also find an enjoyable via ferrata on the Rosshütte. It is moderately difficult and highly recommended. Our father-son excursion on the via ferrata in Seefeld was very good. Take a look at the pictures and the description of the Seefeld via ferrata here.

Winter Holidays Alps in Seefeld

In winter, the Rosshütte is THE ski area in Seefeld. You have the most kilometers of slopes! Thanks to the orientation towards the sun, you can wonderfully stop here and sunbathe (even for a winter holiday without skis!). I also like it up here because Seefeld has an extremely high probability of snow due to its location. You don’t have this anywhere else in the Karwendel. When it is often still green in Mittenwald, there is snow for skiing on the Rosshütte in Seefeld. Here are the pictures and descriptions from my day in the Seefeld ski area Seefeld ski area

Largest lake of Tyrol: Achensee

The largest lake in Tyrol is located directly on the steep rock faces of the Seebergspitze and Seekarspitze in the Karwendel: It is the Achensee. If you want to experience it from its most beautiful side, I recommend the Mariensteig to the Gaisalm in combination with the Achensee Schiffahrt. We first hiked with the children on the narrow hiking trail directly along the turquoise-green mountain lake, ate very well on the Gaisalm and then continued with the boat. If you don’t want to hike, I recommend exploring Lake Achensee by ship: With the new hop-on-hop-off ticket, you can use all ships on the Achensee for a whole day and get on and off as often as you like. This is how you can reach the Gaisalm by boat, even barrier-free! Enjoy you holidays alps.

The Karwendel is a very well-known area in the Alps. The mountains fascinate with their stone peaks. 20% of them are in Bavaria (Germany) and 80% in Tyrol (Austria). The Karwendel is one of the most beautiful natural sights in Austria. The mountains can be reached from several sides: from Munich mostly over the Sylvensteinsee into the Eng to the Ahornboden, over the Achenpass towards Achensee or over the Walchensee to Wallgau, Krün and Mittenwald. It takes around 1.5 hours to get to these beautiful mountains from Munich.
